Who we are
Established in 1997, LMFL (Language and Music for Life) is a worldwide family of students and teachers, offering summer courses in the UK and Europe. We provide music and foreign language education tailored to the individual needs of younger students, teens and adults of all levels and backgrounds.

Frensham, Surrey, 1998
Our History
Our first summer course was held in Frensham, Surrey, in August 1998. Since then our music and language summer courses have welcomed students of all ages, from 5 to adult, from around the world, in some of the most beautiful locations in the UK and across Europe.
Our summer schools take place in settings of natural beauty and historic architecture – the perfect environment for an enriching, inspiring experience. Explore new places, develop your musical and language skills, and make lifelong connections in unforgettable surroundings.
Our students
A community united by music
LMFL thrives on diversity. We welcome students of all ages and levels – younger students, teenagers and adults in piano, strings, woodwind, brass and voice – from Shanghai to San Francisco and far beyond.
Starting out
Beginner & junior learners
Those embarking on their musical journey, or young children under the age of 11.
Developing
Amateur to intermediate
Predominantly teenagers and adults with a minimum of grade 5 in at least one instrument or voice.
Aspiring
Future professionals
Those preparing for conservatoires or other higher musical education programmes.
No auditions are required.
The student–teacher connection
Fostering a strong student–teacher connection is at the heart of our educational philosophy. Students and teachers work, live and eat in the same environment, and interact outside the classroom too – making for a richer, more holistic learning experience. LMFL truly resembles a family.
Our philosophy
Music learning and music making are much more than mere performance; they are an integral part of the growth of the whole person, young and adult alike. One learns while changing and changes while learning. In the same way, we learn languages not just to communicate but to live fully – to connect with those around us and deepen our understanding of the world.
So we strive not only to provide the highest quality of education, but to make a real difference in our students’ lives – going beyond technique to help them discover more about who they are.
Our tuition
Jazz & classical
Music
Personalised, one-to-one instruction in jazz and classical genres, including preparation for Trinity and ABRSM exams. Optional modules let you explore making music in groups alongside your individual classes. Please bring piano parts for all the repertoire you plan to study, and take them to every lesson.
English, French, Spanish, Italian, German
Languages
A focus on spoken communication and listening. Join conversational or structured small groups, or take intensive individual lessons – including preparation for GCSE and GCE language exams and Cambridge English exams.
English
IELTS
Designed to help students get their desired IELTS score – ideal for those who need it to secure a place at a UK or other anglophone conservatoire or university. Open to all students, with or without a music module.
Our founder
Arlette Herrenschmidt-Moller
As Creative Director and course organiser, Arlette was passionate about pedagogy. She prepared each course with great care and dedication, together with her husband Dr Alan D. Moller and the tutors. Watching young and not-so-young people develop their musical and linguistic talents – and often find a new and successful direction in life – gave her the greatest pleasure.
Arlette passed away suddenly on 24th December 2021. Her loss is felt keenly by her family and by the wider family she created: Language and Music for Life.
