About Maria

Maria Luigia Borsi was born in Sora (Italy). She studied with Antonietta Stella, Lucia Stanescu, Claudio Desderi and Renata Scotto. 

The Italian soprano is hailed by critics worldwide for her vocal dynamism and interpretive prowess. She has forged a distinguished career that has taken her throughout Europe, South America, Asia and the USA. 

Highlights of her career include the role of Liù in Turandot at the Teatro alla Scala, and as Violetta in La traviata under Lorin Maazel for the reopening of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

She has performed leading roles at the Salzburg Festival, Zurich Opernhaus, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Gran Teatre del Liceu, New National Theatre of Tokyo, Royal Danish Opera, Les Chorégies d’Orange, and concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Münchner Philharmoniker, Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Tokyo Philharmonic.

Borsi has collaborated with illustrious conductors Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Myung-Whun Chung, Marcello Viotti, Michel Plasson, Marco Armiliato, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Andres Orozco-Estrada, Pablo Heras-Casado, Carlo Rizzi, Ramon Tebar, Giordano Bellincampi, Enrique Mazzola, Donato Renzetti, Maurizio Benini, and with eminent stage directors Franco Zeffirelli, Hugo De Ana, Damiano Michieletto, Stephen Langridge, Graham Vick, Jurgen Flimm, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Daniele Abbado, Giancarlo del Monaco, Nicolas Joel and Robert Carsen.

She made her recital debut at London's Wigmore Hall with renowned US pianist John Novacek. Her first solo album, “Italian Soprano Arias” featuring the London Symphony Orchestra, was released worldwide on the NAXOS label and received high praise by the international musical press. Furthermore, a track from this album was used in the film, “All Quiet on the Western Front”, which won an Oscar for the sound track.

Borsi was one of five guest artists appearing in the world televised opening performance of the Milan EXPO accompanied by the Teatro alla Scala orchestra and choir under the baton of Marco Armiliato and with colleagues Diana Damrau, Francesco Meli, Lang Lang and Andrea Bocelli.

She currently holds a teaching position at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena for the ‘Chigiana Global Academy Program’ in collaboration with several US universities. Maria Luigia Borsi first taught on the LMFL course in August 2025.
