About Murry
Murray studied at the RNCM with Howard Snell from 1984 to 1988. In 1989, after a year with the Orchestra of the Royal Ballet, he was appointed Principal Trumpet with the Orchestra of Opera North. Since then, he hasappeared frequently as guest principal trumpet with leading orchestras in the UK and throughout Europe.
Murray has taught at the RNCM since 1990 and has given masterclasses throughout Europe, America and Asia, as well as at leading British conservatoires and universities. Many of his former students now hold orchestral and teaching positions in the UK, Europe, and the USA. Murray has also worked as trumpet professor for at the Universities of Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York as well as for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
As well as numerous solo recitals and concerto appearances, Murray has enjoyed performing chamber music with the Brass Ensemble of Opera North, the Orfeo Trumpet Consort and the Golden Section (previously the Wallace Collection), and has recorded with the London Trumpet Sound.
For many years he was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild and hosted the 2002 conference of the ITG at the RNCM.
After more than 30 years as Principal Trumpet with the Orchestra of Opera North, Murray took up the position of Head of School of Wind, Brass and Percussion / Director of Brass at the RNCM in 2022.
